Blog Guelph: Guelph Winter

It's time for me to start sorting seeds. I put it off last fall, and just sort of labelled a big old envelope and stuck in the respective seeds. At least I dried out the tomato seeds I loved. Here's a handy template to make things easier, and I've used the first one before, and it's the perfect size to throw in a bunch to give to friends.

This weekend I am making french onion soup. While browsing the Blog Guelph pool, I happened upon Cafrel's photos and the recipe she tweaked. Thanks Francesca!

Made in Guelph - sami k (the k is for potassium!) / Sami Kelsh
It is with great pleasure that we are able to feature the amazing photography of Sami Kelsh, whose work speaks to an inner and unsilenceable need to create. She seems motivated to translate that which she experienced to that which she and we can re-experience. Her images seem to be a vibrant rendering of not the physical but the emotional reality of her times. Sami has cultivated an expansive set of dynamic and engaging self portraits that are among the most impressive and fascinating that I have yet to follow. It is as though in turning her camera towards herself, she ends up capturing the perspective of outward from inside. Sami seems like someone who is continually questioning, constructing, deconstructing, and playing in her world. Her work is equal parts serious and self focused as it lighthearted and encompassing. I find the evocative, confident, honest tones in her self portraits underpin much of her photography. Sami's work leaves me with the feeling that she is creating images in a way that is acutely paired with her very personal motivations. She photographs exclusively with film and I feel that the emotionality of her images would saturate any digital sensor. I imagine she has a camera with her at all times, but I get the feeling that she'd be using words, or brushstrokes, or spray paint to provide an alternate path to the same destination. Sami is an amazing artist with a cache of images that I admire, I respect, and I find incredibly thought provoking and inspiring. Thank you Sami, for sharing your vision in such an open and honest way. For those of you not yet familiar with her work, hightail to her page and start sifting through her sets.
